Following more than a decade of exhibiting across Asia, Liminal Traces introduces Galli’s work to Korean audiences for the first time through a series of eight new paintings created exclusively for the exhibition.
Galli’s paintings begin not at the easel but on the screen of a smartphone, where digital graffiti drawn with a fingertip becomes the starting point for works rendered by hand in oil. Trained in the tradition of Italian figurative painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Galli translates these fleeting digital gestures into paint, setting them against lush natural landscapes to stage an encounter between two visual languages — nature and interface, memory and mediation, presence and screen.

지난 10여 년간 아시아 전역에서 작품 활동을 이어온 Galli는 이번 전시를 통해 한국 관객에게 처음으로 자신의 작품 세계를 소개 다. 전시에서는 이번 서울 개인전을 위해 특별히 제작한 신작 회화 8점을 선보인다.

Galli의 회화는 캔버스 앞의 이젤에서 시작되지 않는다. 그의 작업은 스마트폰 화면 위에서 손끝으로 그려낸 디 지털 그래피티에서 출발하며, 이는 다시 손으로 구현되는 유화 작업의 출발점이 된다. Florence의 Academy of Fine Arts에서 이탈리아 구상회화의 전통을 바탕으로 수학한 Galli는 순간적으로 생성되고 사라지는 디지털 제 스처를 물감의 언어로 변환하고, 이를 풍부한 자연 풍경 속에 배 함으로써 서로 다른 두 시각 언어의 만남을 구성한다. 이는 자연과 인터페이스, 기억과 매개, 현존과 스크린 사이에서 형성되는 긴장이자 대화이다.

The exhibition takes its title from this in-between condition: Galli’s canvases hover between the immaterial and the physical, the instant and the durable, functioning as afterimages, traces of gestures that painting alone can retrieve and hold. Liminal Traces proposes a space where technology and nature coexist, inviting viewers to consider what remains of presence when so much of seeing now happens through a screen.

전시 제목은 이와 같은 경계적 상태에서 비롯된다. Galli의 캔버스는 비물질적인 것과 물리적인 것, 순간적인 것과 지속되는 것 사이를 오가며, 회화만이 포착하고 간직할 수 있는 몸짓의 잔상과 흔적을 담아낸다.《Liminal Traces》는 기술과 자연이 공존하는 하나의 공간을 제안한다. 나아가 시각 경험의 상당 부분이 스 크린을 통해 매개되는 오늘날, ‘현존’이란 무엇이며 그것은 어떠한 흔적을 남기는지 관객에게 질문한다.

Stefano Galli

Stefano Galli (b. 1989, Florence) trained in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He won the Enegan Prize in 2015 before relocating to Shanghai, where he developed a significant body of work through a residency at NoName Studio and a series of solo exhibitions. His work has been presented at major art fairs and institutions across Greater China and Southeast Asia, including Art Central, Art021, Art Shenzhen, and One Art Taipei. Rooted in Italian figurative painting and shaped by years of working in China, Galli’s practice explores the relationship between digital technologies and traditional painting by translating smartphone-generated graffiti into oil on canvas, creating works that inhabit the space between the virtual and the material.

Stefano Galli(b. 1989, Florence)는 Florence의 Academy of Fine Arts에서 회화를 전공하고. 2015년 Florence에서 Enegan Prize를 수상한 이후 상하이로 활동 기반을 옮겼으며, NoName Studio레 지던시와 다수의 개인전을 통해 독자적인 작품 세계를 발전시켜왔다. 주요 개인전으로는 《Sospiro》(2022), 《The Falling of Blossom, the Trail of Fireflies》(2023),《云游 / Wandering》(2024), 《Neomimesis》(2025) 등이 있다. 그의 작품은 중화권과 동남아시아의 주요 아트페어 및 미술 기관에서 소개되었으며, Art Central, ART021, Art Shenzhen, One Art Taipei 등에서 선보였다. 다. 이탈리아 구상회화의 전통을 바탕으로 하면서도 중국에서의 오랜 작업 경험을 통해 확장된 Galli의 예술 실 천은 디지털 기술과 전통 회화의 관계를 탐구한다.
